Mmmm….fried bugs. You can find carts full of fried bugs all over SE Asia. Apparently they are not only filling, but can be really healthy for you. Some seem like they’d be more horrible to eat than others (see the giant cockroach?) whereas others are so crispy that they just taste like a very well done french fry. One thing I didn’t know about eating bugs is that in Thailand, most of these critters are raised in captivity for the sole purpose of being sold as snacks. Yum!
Your food pics usually make me hungry. This was doesn’t however. 🙂 Did you try any? We ate a grub worm thingy in Zimbabwe. It was chewy.
I can’t deal with the chewy things…but I would have made Justin eat one!
Oops, I mean “one” not was. Sorry, I’ll blame that typo on the jet-leg. 🙂
Yeah I’ve heard about the health factor of insects as well, something about the high protein to low fat content? I’m not sure I’m an adventurous enough eater though to try eating them…
Generally I don’t even want to look at the bugs, and in this case I didn’t eat any, but Justin did some sampling and said it wasn’t too bad.
That’s just something I couldn’t bring myself to try!
I don’t blame you! These suckers were pretty big, definitely more than one bite in most cases.
Nothing like a tasty roadside snack… Even a crunchy bug has some appeal under the right conditions!
So true! In our case those conditions included at least a few large beers…
